Flames of Memory 2023 will see the National D-Day Memorial pay tribute to the 4,415 men who lost their lives on D-Day as dusk descends and hides the Blue Ridge Mountains. The event is scheduled for December 1, 2, and 3 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Thousands of luminarias, arranged across the Memorial’s grounds, will glow in remembrance of the Overlord’s fallen and in honour of the supreme sacrifice each made to relight the lamp of freedom. Parking is available for those who would like to drive around the circle and observe from their cars or stroll through the illuminated Memorial.
Visitors can experience Christmas 1944 on the front lines with Christmas in Wartime on Friday and Saturday evenings. Living history displays and reenactors bring to life how soldiers observed the holidays during World War II in this unique presentation. On Saturday, G.I. Santa makes his yearly appearance.
Free entry is offered. Contributions are accepted. The Bedford Area Welcome Centre & Department of Tourism, Steel Dynamics, Framatome, BWX Technologies, Inc., and the Town of Bedford, Virginia are kindly sponsors of Flames of Memory 2023.
